SATA WINS USTA SOUTHERN AWARD!freeclinics_forsythefreezepops200

On January 21st the Savannah Area Tennis Association was awarded "NJTL of the Year" from USTA Southern. NJTL stands for National Junior Tennis and Learning and it refers to all of the wonderful community outreach that SATA does for Savannah juniors. From hosting tournaments to running junior team tennis to providing summer camps and school programs, SATA trys to bring tennis to everyone. In doing so SATA programs emphasize life skills, character development and health and nutrition information. We want the child to impact the ball so that we may impact the child.

To win this award SATA was in competition with all community tennis associations in the nine southern states that comprise the southern section.

SPECIAL POPS TENNIS TEAM SCORES BIG IN ATLANTA TOURNAMENT

The air was filled with excitement and anticipation for the kick off of Atlanta's 6th Annual Adaptive Tennis Tournament, the largest of its kind in the United States.  Among the competitors were 13 athletes from Savannah's Special Pops Tennis program who, in preparation for the tournament, attended weekly clinics at the Franklin Creekspecial pops tournament Tennis Center. Landings tennis members served as coaches and, in Atlanta, as chaperones and doubles partners.

This tournament was a humbling, yet gratifying experience, and a reminder for the many routine things that we easily do, but take for granted. Fulfilling the Special Pops Tennis mission of "enriching the lives and well being of the "intellectually challenged" was alive and well that November weekend.

Congratulations to SATA Super Senior teams at Southern Sectionals.

Congratulations are in order for Jackie Hites' 3.5 70's team and Ruth McMullin's 3.0 60's team at the Southern Sectionals. Both teams did well, placing 2nd in their respective flights.

2011 Year-end NTRP Ratings Published!

Captains and Players,

Lets' play tennis! The 2011 year-end NTRP ratings were published November 28, 2011, and that is good news for us.  You can view the list of ratings for the Savannah Area from the "Resources" Menu in the left column of the SATA website, www.savannahtennis.com.  Because the fall leagues that just completed are part of 2012, most of the matches from fall are not included in the calculation.  So if you played in our leagues in the fall, but not during the 2011 league year, you may not show in this list.  You can still search for your name or USTA number in Tennislink to find your rating.  The Year-end 4.0 Eligibility List will be published under the Resources Menu when it becomes available.  The Early Start Eligibility List is NOT good for the spring leagues.

Registration is currently open for spring 2012 Adult and Senior Men's and Women's Leagues.  Check the Coordinator's corner in the right-hand column of the SATA website for registration deadlines and league start dates for the individual leagues.  The coordinators' captains letters for each league will be sent to previous season captains shortly.  The details about the captain's meetings will be in those letters and also posted on the website once they are available.

For the first time in years, SATA will be increasing their fees.  Please see the article below for an explanation of the fee increase from SATA president, Chantal Considine.

The 2012 Georgia State Championship schedule is also available on the website.  There is a printable version under the menu item "Leagues/Programs>Adult/Senior.  The dates are also listed in the right-hand column under "State Championship Dates".

Captains are always in short supply and we greatly appreciate all that we have. If any of the players are interested in becoming a captain but not sure how to start, please contact an individual league coordinator or just let me know and we will do our best to "hook you up".  If you are a captain but decided that you need time off from that duty, please let your coordinator know as soon as you can, so we can help your players find a team.

Now, play hard, get lots of exercise, play fair, and have fun.

League Fee Increase for 2012

This season you will notice that the league registration fee has increased by $3.00. Beginning in January, USTA Georgia will begin to charge $2.00 per registrant. This fee will be billed directly to SATA. Georgia had been the only state in the Southern Section that did not charge a fee and it will still be among the lowest in the Section. The added dollar will come to SATA and will help our organization maintain financial health and better enable us to promote and grow tennis programming locally. This will raise the SATA portion of the registration fee from $11 to $12 -- still among the lowest in the state and in the entire Southern Section. As always there will be a Tennislink fee of $3.00. Total registration for most leagues will now be $17 (previously $14).

SATA WINS TOP AWARDS

The Savannah Area Tennis Association (SATA) was awarded top honors at a recent awards banquet hosted by USTA Georgia. SATA was named "Community Tennis Association (CTA) Of The Year", as well as "National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) Chapter Of The Year". This is the first time that a CTA has won both of these top Georgia awards in the same year, and marks the third time in six years that SATA has been named "CTA Of The Year."

SATA faced stiff competition from powerhouse CTAs from Atlanta, Columbus, and other cities across Georgia. Winning this award in a huge tennis playing state like Georgia places SATA among the best nationally.

Also garnering honors was SATA's Junior Team Tennis Coordinator, Zambia Bryant, who won "Junior Team Tennis (JTT) Coordinator Of The Year". The Landings Club received "Member Organization Of The Year" for its partnership with USTA in many events from the Challenger pro tournament held in May to the Super Senior State Championships held in October.

Congratulations to all of the many SATA volunteers who have contributed to these awards!

The Great Racquet Giveaway

Every year SATA goes to the local high school tennis teams with good used adult racquets for the players. Some of these children come out with junior racquets or no racquets at all. Donating your used racquets is a great thing to do.
SO IF YOU HAVE A PERFECTLY GOOD RACQUET sitting in your closet, please donate it to SATA and the Free Racquet Giveaway Program. Phyllis is also continually collecting other tennis related items as well, including bags, balls, racquet covers, some clothing, etc. Anytime you have material to donate, please let her know. Savannah Juniors attend State Championships - July 2011!

This was the best result Savannah Juniors has ever produced!!!  SATA is very proud of the junior team tennis programs that Zambia Bryant, our junior coordinator is building.

Again thank you to all of the captains Lisa Colbert, Jennifer Cox, Marita Littlefield and Linda Sun for putting in so much time and effort to make this work. Thanks to the parents and players for committing so much time.

U10 team finished in fourth. Great job to all of the players and parents and Marita Littlefield.
U12 team finished in a very close second place. Thank you to Linda Sun and Jennifer Cox.
U14 team finished in fourth. They had very stiff competition.
U18 team finished in third. They were in 1st place all Saturday and it came down to the final match in their flight. They lost first place by 9 games.

Just a few facts: SATA has never sent 4 teams to state at once. We last sent a team in 2009. We never sent a team in U10. We sent 31 players and only 3 players played at state before. We never had two teams contend for 1st place in their flight, we never even had one team contend for 1st place.
